Οpen-air energy museum
Considering the intense environmental downgrading of the area and the specialties of the local daily life as well, there is the necessity for the environmental restoration and the social, the cultural and the economic revitalization of the area.
The intention of the proposal has been the reconstruction of a radiant point that can adopt both a local and a hyper local scale, can be vital for the daily life and the local culture and finally create a landmark for the visitors. At the same time, it should contribute to the recreation of a durable ecosystem. The park has a double role: from the one side, it can be a cultural point and from the other, it can be a paradise for the exploration of the nature.
A basic function is the open-air energy museum. An experiential promenade reveals the energy evolution from the tunnels of Karyochori to the renewable energy sources.
The observance of the nature is organized in thematic routes. There is also provided land for experimental and conventional agriculture.
The environmental development is ensured and strengthened via the enrichment of the flora and fauna and the biodiversity. The creation of a mosaic where the different vegetation typologies and function distribution will be alternated following an organic motif, is used as a basic design tool. Sustainability issues and bioclimatic principles, the selection of recycling materials and the use of photovoltaic panels will create a “climate neutral” park, concerning its daily energy demands. The open-air installations, the light constructions and the routes are designed following the design principles for the comfortable movement of the disabled people.
